The Mansfield Dual Drill

I would have never imagined I would succumb to the wiles and flash of a 2AM infomercial. But this one was about a tool, a Dual Bit Drill. Ok it caught my attention.

Since sleep was avoiding me I decided to watch the program and see what the story was about this dual drill.

Right away I was intrigued, They claimed all you had to do was bit up 2 different bits and when you wanted to change to the 2nd one, push a button and flip it around.

Well to make a story shorter, I dialed the number and spent the next 15 minutes hearing all the other offers they were selling. Refusing those I at last completed my order. And with 2 east payments of $29.99 it was mine. Shipping didn't take too long 14 days as memory serves.

First thing I noticed it was packaged well, a good start. I opened the case and lifted the drill out, a bit weight but its 18v power supply is fairly standard weight and the extra chuck may well account for the extra weight.

It had a comfortable feel in my hand, and easy to use trigger, rev/forward switch. The next thing that needed trying is the chuck selector. Pulling back a slide on each side of the drill, something I found a bit of a stretch with my small hands, but it was doable. Flip, click and there you go, the other bit I selected.(image to the right shows half-way through switching)

I grabbed a board and after drilling a couple dozen screws I felt comfortable with the power. But the real nagging question was would it hold up over time. Well Its a year after I purchased this Dual-Drill and it is still going strong. Mainly I find it useful for countersink/pre drilling and screwing in screws. Could I live without a switching drill? yea probably, but do I want to? NO. I like it, it had its own spot on my workbench and I honestly do reach for it a lot. I am giving this a "Full Woody"

its not a shop necessity but its worth having.
